From Weapons to Works of Art: A Brief History
The building that now houses the Torpedo Factory Art Center wasn’t always a hub for creativity. In fact, it has a military past dating back over a century!
🛠️ A Munitions Factory (1918-1945)
Built in 1918, during World War I, the factory was originally designed for the production of torpedoes for the U.S. Navy.
Though World War I ended before production ramped up, the facility became active again during World War II, manufacturing Mark III and Mark XIV torpedoes.
After the war, the building was repurposed for military storage before sitting mostly unused for years.
🎨 A New Life as an Art Center (1974 - Today)
In 1974, the City of Alexandria, recognizing the potential of this historic structure, transformed it into an innovative arts space.
The building was repurposed into working artist studios and galleries, giving local artists a place to create and showcase their work.
Today, it’s one of the largest and most successful visual arts centers in the U.S., drawing thousands of visitors every year.
